Born in January or February? How to Find Your Real Chinese Zodiac Sign
If your birthday falls in January or February, there's a good chance you've been reading the wrong Chinese horoscope. Here's how to check.
Here is one of the most common mistakes in astrology: you look up your birth year, read that you're a Horse, and spend years relating to the Horse, only to find out you were actually a Snake all along.
If you were born in January or February, this may apply to you. The Chinese zodiac doesn't follow the Western calendar. Each animal year begins at Lunar New Year, which falls on a different date between January 21 and February 20 every year.
Why January 1 Doesn't Count
The Western (Gregorian) calendar follows the sun. The traditional Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the phases of the moon, with an extra month added now and then to stay in step with the seasons. Lunar New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands somewhere between late January and mid-February.
So the animal changes on that new-moon date, not on January 1. Anyone born in the weeks before Lunar New Year belongs to the previous year's animal and element.
Example: Someone born on January 15, 1990 is often told they're a Horse, because 1990 was the Year of the Horse. But Lunar New Year 1990 fell on January 27, so they're actually an Earth Snake (1989). Someone born on March 1, 1990 is a Metal Horse.

"But Another Website Says Something Different"
You may see a few different answers online, and there are two reasons:
- Some sites use the calendar year. Many simple zodiac pages just use the year number and ignore Lunar New Year. That's the mistake this article is about.
- Some astrologers use Lichun (the start of spring). In Four Pillars of Destiny (BaZi), a more technical branch of Chinese astrology, the year changes at the solar term Lichun, which falls around February 3–5 every year, regardless of the moon. If you were born between Lichun and Lunar New Year (or the other way round), a BaZi practitioner may assign you a different animal than a popular zodiac chart does.
For everyday Chinese zodiac use (festivals, horoscopes, compatibility), Lunar New Year is the standard boundary, and it's what we use on East West Zodiac.
Does the Element Change Too?
Yes. The element follows the same boundary as the animal. The ten-year element cycle goes by the last digit of the Chinese year:
